Beginners Guide to Prostate Massage
Prostate massage gets talked about more than it used to, which is a good thing. For men who haven’t tried it, the prostate gland is capable of producing some of the most intense orgasms the body can generate. That’s not an exaggeration. Done properly, prostate stimulation can produce full-body orgasms and, for some men, multiple climaxes without direct penile stimulation at all.
This guide covers the basics: where the prostate is, how to stimulate it, how prostate toys work, and what to think about when choosing your first one.
Where Is the Prostate?
The prostate gland (also called the P-spot or male G-spot) sits a couple of inches inside the anus, on the wall closest to the rectum. It’s a small gland that plays an important role in ejaculation, and it’s also one of the most nerve-rich areas in the male body.
You can reach it with a finger, though the angle can be awkward, especially on yourself. The fingernail should be trimmed short and smooth before any exploration. Use plenty of lubricant. The anal passage produces no natural lubrication, which means any insertion without lube is going to be uncomfortable.
What Does Prostate Stimulation Feel Like?
Most men describe a distinct pressure-plus-sensation that’s unlike anything produced by penile stimulation alone. Some find it immediately intense, others need a little time to relax into it. If you’ve never experienced it before, it can feel unfamiliar at first, which is normal. Going slowly matters more than going enthusiastically.
Orgasms from prostate stimulation tend to feel deeper and longer-lasting than standard orgasms, and many men find they can experience multiple waves of climax without a refractory period in between.
Using a Finger First
Before investing in a prostate massager, it’s worth spending some time exploring manually. Lie on your back with knees raised, apply a generous amount of anal lubricant to your finger and the opening of the anus, and insert slowly. With the finger facing forward (toward the stomach), move gently in a come-hither motion. The prostate feels slightly firmer than the surrounding tissue, often described as a rounded bump. That’s what you’re looking for.
How Prostate Massagers Work
Prostate massagers are curved to make the prostate easier to reach than a straight toy allows. They have a smooth, rounded tip designed for comfortable insertion and the curve directs stimulation toward exactly the right spot. Unlike most other toys where bigger often means better, prostate massagers with smaller tips can actually produce more intense stimulation because the contact is more focused.
Many prostate massagers also include a perineum stimulator, an external section that sits against the perineum (the area between the scrotum and the anus) when the toy is inserted. Simultaneous stimulation of the prostate from inside and the perineum from outside can produce what’s often described as a double P-spot orgasm.
Vibrating vs Non-Vibrating

Both types are popular and it comes down to personal preference. Non-vibrating massagers give you complete control through movement alone, using circular motions or an in-and-out action to build stimulation. Vibrating versions add a layer of sensation that can be very effective but can also feel overwhelming to someone new to anal play.
If you’re not sure which to start with, a non-vibrating massager is the simpler introduction. If you do buy a vibrating version and find the vibration isn’t for you, you can always use it switched off and treat it as a non-vibrating toy.
How to Use a Prostate Massager
Position matters. Lying on your back with knees raised, or bending forward with your upper body supported on a bed or sofa, are both effective starting positions. Apply lubricant generously to both the toy and the opening of the anus.
Insert slowly, letting the body adjust at each stage rather than pushing through. Once inserted, start with a circular movement to find the spots that feel most responsive. As stimulation builds, increase the pressure gradually. The closer you get to orgasm, the more intensity you’ll want to apply.
You can also move the toy up and down in a more direct motion for a more immediate experience. Over time, some men find they can produce orgasm through the muscle contractions of the anus alone, without any manual movement of the toy.
Choosing Your First Prostate Massager
Start with something at the smaller end of the size range. A toy that’s too large before your body is ready is going to kill the experience. Look for soft silicone construction, a smooth rounded tip, and a flared base so the toy can’t get pulled in further than intended.
If you want to try vibration, choose a model with at least a few different speed settings so you can start gently and work up.
Never use a prostate toy without a flared base. This is a non-negotiable safety rule for all anal toys.
Aftercare and Cleaning
Clean any prostate toy thoroughly after every use with sex toy cleaner or antibacterial soap and warm water. Silicone toys can also be sterilised by boiling briefly. Store separately from other toys to prevent material degradation.
