How to Use Jiggle Balls

Jiggle balls go by a lot of names. Ben Wa balls, kegel balls, love balls, orgasm balls, sex balls. They all refer to the same basic concept: small weighted balls worn internally in the vagina that create gentle stimulation through movement, while at the same time giving the pelvic floor muscles a workout.

They became significantly more well-known after featuring in a certain bestselling novel, but they’ve been used for centuries. This guide covers what they actually do, how to choose the right type, and how to use them correctly.

What Jiggle Balls Actually Do

Most jiggle balls contain a smaller weighted inner ball that rolls around inside the outer shell when you move. This creates spontaneous, unpredictable vibration-like sensations. The outer ball sits inside the vagina and the vaginal muscles naturally contract around it to keep it in place, which is how the pelvic floor workout happens.

With regular use over time, this strengthens the pubococcygeus muscle (the main pelvic floor muscle). A stronger pelvic floor means stronger orgasms, better bladder control, and for women who’ve had children or notice some loosening with age, a tighter sensation during sex. The pelvic floor exercises happen just by wearing the balls and moving around. You don’t have to do anything specific.

Types of Jiggle Balls

There are two main types:

Solid balls have no inner weighted ball and create less movement-based stimulation. They’re used more specifically for pelvic floor strengthening exercises because they require the muscles to actively grip them, rather than passively responding to movement.

Balls with an inner weighted ball are more popular for both pleasure and exercise. The spontaneous movement of the inner ball creates stimulation that you can’t predict or control, which is what many women find most enjoyable.

Most sets come as linked pairs connected by a soft silicone or latex cord with a retrieval loop at the end. Orgasm balls with motorised vibration are also available for women who want more than the natural movement provides.

Which Type Should You Choose?

Women who’ve had children, or who are older, tend to do better with larger, lighter balls. They’re easier to hold in place while the pelvic floor muscles strengthen. Starting with something too small and too heavy before the muscles are strong enough can be frustrating.

Women who haven’t had children, or who are younger and have more naturally toned pelvic floor muscles, can generally start with heavier balls, which provide more resistance and a better workout.

Smaller, heavier solid balls like traditional Ben Wa balls are considered the advanced option. They provide the greatest muscular challenge but require a good level of pelvic floor strength to use effectively.

How to Insert Jiggle Balls

  1. Empty your bladder beforehand.
  2. Apply a small amount of water-based lubricant to the balls and to yourself. They’ll go in considerably more smoothly.
  3. Insert the balls one at a time, gently pushing each one inside the vagina. Leave the retrieval cord and loop outside the body at all times.
  4. The vaginal muscles should naturally contract around the balls and hold them in place. If they feel like they won’t stay in, hold them gently while your muscles adjust for the first minute or two.

Wearing and Exercising

Once in place, simply moving around is enough to benefit from jiggle balls. Walking, doing housework, going to the shops. The movement of the inner balls stimulates automatically, and the muscles are working to hold everything in place throughout.

To increase the workout effect, consciously squeeze and release the vaginal muscles around the balls while wearing them. This actively engages the pelvic floor rather than just passively benefiting from the movement.

Many women also find they become aroused while wearing jiggle balls, because the inner ball can stimulate the g-spot with its unpredictable movement. This is a pleasant side effect of the exercise.

One practical note: sneezing or coughing suddenly can cause the balls to shift or occasionally come out. It’s worth being aware of this if you’re planning to wear them in public.

Using Jiggle Balls for Pleasure

Beyond the exercise angle, jiggle balls can be worn during masturbation or partnered sex. Wearing them while using a vibrator or during penetrative sex can make orgasms noticeably more intense as the vaginal muscles tense and contract around the balls at climax.

Small solid Ben Wa balls can also be worn during penetrative sex, though check the product description to confirm this is appropriate for the specific balls you’re using.

Removing Jiggle Balls

Relax your muscles and pull on the retrieval cord steadily. If they feel stuck, bending forward or doing a small jump often helps free them. Never use jiggle balls that don’t have a retrieval cord. Solid metal Ben Wa balls without a cord are recoverable by squatting and bearing down (similar to a tampon), but retrieval cord versions are always preferable for comfort and ease.

Cleaning

Wash with warm water and sex toy cleaner or antibacterial soap after every use. Silicone balls can be boiled briefly for sterilisation. Dry thoroughly before storing.
