How to Use a Butt Plug

How to Use a Butt Plug
If you’re trying a butt plug for the first time, the most important thing to know before you start is this: use lubricant. Unlike the vagina, the anus produces no natural lubrication at all. Going in without it is genuinely painful and it’s the most common reason people have a bad first experience and don’t try again. With a good anal lubricant and a small, well-chosen toy, first-time butt plug use is comfortable and, for most people, pleasurable.
This guide covers preparation, positions, insertion technique, and what to expect as you go.
Choosing the Right Lubricant
For silicone butt plugs, use a water-based anal lubricant. Silicone lubricant degrades silicone toys over time, so water-based is the safe choice. For butt plugs made from jelly, PVC or hard plastic, either water-based or silicone lubricant will work. Silicone lube lasts longer and tends to be thicker, which many people find more comfortable for anal use.
Apply lubricant generously to both the toy and the opening of the anus before you start. You can also apply a small amount just inside the anal opening using a finger, which helps considerably.
Choosing a Position
There’s no single right position for using a butt plug. These four all work well, and it’s worth trying different ones to find what suits you:
- Lying on your back with a cushion under your hips and legs spread or bent upward
- On all fours (doggy position), which many people find gives the most natural angle
- Kneeling upright and squatting down onto the toy
- Standing with feet slightly wider than shoulder width, squatting down onto the toy
The position that allows the most relaxation is usually the most comfortable. Tension in the surrounding muscles makes insertion harder and less pleasant. Take a few slow breaths first.
Insertion Technique
Hold the plug by the base. Angle the tip toward the anal opening and press gently. Let the body adjust to the pressure rather than pushing through quickly. The tapered tip of a well-designed butt plug allows the anus to open gradually, which is the point.
Once the tip is inside and comfortable, move your hand to the base and use that to guide more of the plug inward. Push in steady, gradual increments rather than one continuous motion. Pause at any point if you need to. When the widest part of the plug passes through, the plug will naturally sit in place with only the flared base remaining outside the body. That flared base is what keeps it safely in position.
If at any point you feel genuine pain rather than just unfamiliar pressure, stop, remove the plug, and apply more lubricant before trying again. Pain is always a signal to slow down.
Once It’s In

Most of the sensation from a butt plug comes from the fullness it creates. You can leave it in place and enjoy that feeling on its own, or increase stimulation by gently thrusting the plug in and out or grinding against it. Some people also wear butt plugs during vaginal intercourse, which many find significantly intensifies the experience.
There’s no fixed time limit. Remove it whenever you want to, or when it starts to feel uncomfortable. If you plan to wear it for an extended period, reapply lubricant as needed as it can dry out over time.
Removing the Plug
Take hold of the flared base and pull gently but steadily. Relaxing the muscles rather than tensing makes removal much easier. If it feels stuck or uncomfortable, more lubricant applied around the base usually helps.
After Use
Clean the plug immediately after every use with warm water and sex toy cleaner or antibacterial soap. Silicone plugs can also be boiled briefly for full sterilisation. Store separately from other toys to prevent material degradation.
Building Up Over Time
First-time users should start with a small plug with a slim profile. Once that feels comfortable and familiar, moving to something with more girth is natural. Anal trainer kits (sets of three progressively sized plugs) take the guesswork out of this by giving you the next size up already in your collection.
Vibrating butt plugs are worth exploring once you’re comfortable with a standard version. The vibration adds stimulation on top of the fullness and can be very effective. Start on the lowest setting and work up.
