Waterproof Sex Toys – What the Ratings Mean and What’s Worth Buying
Waterproof sex toys are worth understanding for two distinct reasons: you might want to use them in the bath or shower, or you might just want something that’s genuinely easy to clean. Both are legitimate reasons to prioritise waterproofing, and the distinction matters when you’re comparing products.
What Waterproof Actually Means
Toy manufacturers use waterproof, water-resistant, and submersible inconsistently, but the underlying standard they reference is the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system. The second digit in an IP rating tells you how water-resistant something is. IPX4 means splash-resistant from any direction – fine for use in the shower. IPX7 means submersible in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes – suitable for bath use. IPX8 is deeper submersion.
Most good vibrators marketed as waterproof are IPX7 minimum. Cheaper models described as “water resistant” may only be IPX4 and shouldn’t be submerged. If the listing doesn’t mention an IP rating, assume the more conservative interpretation.
Bath and Shower Play
The bath is a genuinely good setting for toy use – warm water relaxes muscles, reduces sensitivity to initial penetration, and the general context of bathing is already associated with self-care and relaxation. The main practical issue is lubrication: water washes away natural lubrication and most water-based lubricants, making penetration less comfortable. Silicone-based lubricant is the solution in wet environments – it isn’t washed away by water. Note that silicone lubricant is not suitable for use with silicone toys; for silicone toys in the bath, use more water than you might in other contexts, or choose a hybrid lubricant designed for this.
The shower offers different ergonomics – more heat, less submersion, better standing positions for some people. Suction-mounted accessories are available for shower play, including dildo mounts and handles that attach to tiles.
Cleaning Benefits

Beyond bath use, waterproof toys are simply easier to clean. Non-waterproof electric toys have to be cleaned by wiping rather than rinsing, which is less thorough. A properly waterproof toy can be rinsed under running water after use, which removes more residue more efficiently. For non-porous materials like silicone and glass – which are already preferable for hygiene reasons – full waterproofing makes the cleaning process significantly easier.
What’s Available
Virtually every category of sex toy is now available in waterproof versions. Bullet vibrators and small clitoral stimulators are almost universally waterproof at even the entry price point. Rabbit vibrators vary – check the IP rating, as not all are rated for submersion. Wand vibrators are typically not waterproof; a few high-end models are, but most should be kept away from water. Butt plugs and anal toys in silicone are typically waterproof by nature of the material, but if they have electronics, check the rating.
For anyone buying their first vibrator and uncertain what to prioritise, waterproofing is a reasonable tiebreaker between similar products at the same price point. The added versatility and cleaning ease costs nothing extra at most price points.
